Book Cover Design

Book Cover Design With a Story to Tell

Make your first impression as thoughtful as the pages inside.

Your cover is often a reader’s first encounter with your book. It needs to communicate the kind of reading experience you offer, while remaining clear at both full size and thumbnail scale. We start with your story, audience, and format so visual decisions have a purpose.

  • Genre and audience positioning
  • Cover concept development
  • Title and author typography

Your ideas. Thoughtfully brought to life.

Why choose InkStone

Creative direction grounded in your genre and readers

Title hierarchy, author name, spacing, and contrast shape the cover as much as the image does. A design should remain legible when reduced for an online listing. We consider how the title sits with the artwork and how the design could extend to future books when a series is planned.

Build a brief before choosing artwork

Share your genre, synopsis, reader profile, comparable titles, and any design preferences.

Make typography part of the concept

Title hierarchy, author name, spacing, and contrast shape the cover as much as the image does.

Design for the actual publication format

An ebook cover and a printed wraparound cover have different production needs.

Review the design and its usage rights

The proposal should state concept and revision stages, final file formats, and the rights associated with commissioned artwork, fonts, or licensed images.

Frequently asked questions

Good Questions.
Honest Answers.

Everything you'd like to know about book cover design. If your question isn't here, we're always happy to talk.

Ask Us a Question
Can I use my own photograph or illustration?

Yes, if it is suitable for the design and you have the necessary rights and a sufficiently high-resolution file.

Will the cover include a spine?

A spine is part of a print cover when the binding and page count support one. Its dimensions depend on the printer’s specifications.

How many concepts and revisions are included?

The number is stated in your proposal. Additional concepts or a new direction may change the scope and cost.

Can a cover be designed before editing is finished?

Concept work can begin earlier, but the final print cover needs confirmed production details, particularly page count and trim size.

How long does a book cover design project usually take?

Most single covers take two to four weeks from initial brief to final files, depending on how many revision rounds you need and how quickly feedback comes back to us. Series projects and full layout work usually take longer, since each cover needs to be checked against the others for consistency before anything is finalised.

Do you design covers for authors outside Chicago?

Yes. We work with authors right across the United States, and the whole process runs online, so your location within the country makes no difference to how we work together.

Can you match my ebook cover and my printed paperback cover?

Yes, this is one of the more common requests we get. We design both formats as one connected project so the front cover, spine, and back all work together.

What files will I receive at the end?

You will get high-resolution print-ready files and web-ready ebook files, sized correctly for the platforms you plan to use, such as Amazon KDP or IngramSpark.

Do I need to have my manuscript finished before contacting you?

No. Many authors reach out while still finishing their final draft. What helps most is having a clear sense of your genre and story, even if the last few chapters are still being written.

Can you help with book layout as well as the cover?

Yes. Alongside cover design, we offer full interior layout for print and ebook, so your finished book looks consistent from the cover through to the last page.

Do you only work with self-published authors in the United States?

No. While many of our clients are self-publishing, we also work with small presses and agented authors who need cover artwork that meets a publisher’s specific submission or catalogue requirements.

What if I do not like any of the first concepts?

This happens occasionally, and it is not a problem. We would rather hear honest feedback and go back to the drawing board than push you toward a cover you are not happy with. We will talk through what is not working and put together a fresh direction based on that conversation.
