Book Illustration

Book Illustrations That Bring Stories to Life

Expressive artwork, developed around your readers and your vision.

Illustration can carry a story, explain an idea, or establish a book’s visual identity. The best starting point is a clear brief: what the pictures need to communicate, where they will appear, and who will read the book. We help connect those choices to the production plan.

Why choose InkStone

A collaborative creative process from sketch to final art

A page-by-page brief identifies scenes, visual information, and space needed for text. Character sketches and rough compositions can resolve questions before detailed artwork begins. This is particularly useful for picture books, where page turns affect how the story unfolds.

Match the visual style to the book

Age group, genre, subject, and tone influence the illustration approach.

Plan the pages before final artwork

A page-by-page brief identifies scenes, visual information, and space needed for text.

Keep characters and environments consistent

Repeated characters should remain recognizable across poses, expressions, and scenes.

Confirm files and permitted use

Trim size, bleed, color workflow, and print requirements need to be agreed before delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Good Questions.
Honest Answers.

Everything you'd like to know about book illustration. If your question isn't here, we're always happy to talk.

Ask Us a Question
Can I request illustrations for a children’s book?

Yes. Share the manuscript, age group, intended page count, and any visual preferences.

Do I need to know the exact number of images?

A provisional count helps with estimating. We can discuss a page plan before the final scope is agreed.

Can artwork be used beyond the book?

That depends on the agreed rights and licenses. Identify additional uses before commissioning the work.

Can I supply existing illustrations?

Yes, if you have permission to use them and suitable source files. We can discuss how they fit the layout.

Do you only work with children’s books?

No. While picture books and children’s stories make up a large part of our work, we also illustrate covers, chapter headers, and custom artwork for other types of books.

How long does book illustration take?

It depends on the length of the book and the number of illustrations needed. A short picture book might take a few weeks, while a longer, more detailed project can take a couple of months. We will give you a realistic timeline once we understand your project.

Do you work with authors outside Chicago?

Yes. We work with authors right across the United States, not just in Chicago. Most of our process happens over email and video calls, so your location does not need to slow anything down.

Can I use my own reference sketches?

Yes, and we encourage it. If you already have rough sketches or a clear idea of how a character should look, sharing these helps our illustrators get closer to your vision from the start.

Will I own the rights to the finished illustrations?

Yes. Once the project is complete and payment is settled, the artwork is yours to use as agreed in your contract.

Do you take on small or one-off projects?

Yes. Self-published authors make up a large part of our client base, and we are just as happy to work on a single book as we are on an ongoing series.

How do I start the process?

Simply get in touch through our contact page with a short description of your book. We will arrange a chat to talk through your ideas and next steps.
